Friday's Follies and Fun Facts - Cheers Style

Friday, January 15, 2010

Lip Smackers!  It's Friday!  The weekend is upon us.  All my new followers, here on Friday's I impart knowledge.  Useless facts.  Ridiculous information that is only useful for party tricks.

  • Alcohol consumption decreases during the time of the full moon.
  • Drinking lowers rather than raises the body temperature. There is an illusion of increased heat because alcohol causes the capillaries to dilate and fill with more warm blood.
  • "The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" is commonly believed to be the only English sentence devised to include all the letters of the alphabet. However, typesetters have another such sentence: "Pack my box with five dozen liquor jugs."
  • In old England, a whistle was baked into the rim or handle of ceramic cups used by pub patrons. When they wanted a refill, they used the whistle to get service. So when people went drinking, they would "wet their whistle."
  • In ancient Babylon, the bride's father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead (fermented honey beverage) he could drink for a month after the wedding. Because their calendar was lunar or moon-based, this period of free mead was called the "honey month," or what we now call the "honeymoon."
  • Methyphobia is fear of alcohol.
  • In the 1600's thermometers were filled with brandy instead of mercury.
  • The shallow champagne glass originated with Marie Antoinette. It was first formed from wax molds made of her breasts.
  • Desi Arnaz's grandfather was one of the founders of the largest rum distillery in the world.
  • The Manhattan cocktail (whiskey and sweet vermouth) was invented by Winston Churchill's mother.
  • Tom Arnold, Sandra Bullock, Chevy Chase, Bill Cosby, Kris Kristofferson, and Bruce Willis are all former bartenders
  • The U.S. Marines’ first recruiting station was in a bar.
So, there you have it.  Happy Weekend!  Cheers!

Love!

The term "honeymoon" didn't come into being until about the 16th century, well after the Babylonians' civilization had crumbled and was swallowed by the sands of time.

Gifts of honey were based more on the idea that honey was the food of the gods and had medicinal value. It was only fermented--by itself, not as an additive to a beer--in northern Europe, where true mead was made. The Babylonians, Greeks, Sumerians, Persians, Egyptians and Indians all used it more for medicinal purposes, and as it was an expensive, tradeable commodity, it was used more by apothecaries in medicines. Only kings could afford to put it into their drinks.

So glad I don't suffer from methyphobia.....I'd rather have any number of obscure diseases than methyphobia.

And Marie Antoinette had champagne glass shaped boobs....huh who would have known?

I did not know that about the quick brown fox or the five dozen liquor jugs.

Those are the sorts of random facts I enjoy.

I became obsessed with finding champagne saucers a couple of years ago ... and I ran across several references to the Marie Antoinette-champagne saucer story, but that's just what it is according to a number of sources, including this one:

http://www.snopes.com/business/origins/champagne.asp

The story is a fun one for the imagination, but alas, I think that's all it is: a story or myth.

The imbibing of alcohol is guaranteed to increase your intelligence, charm and physical attractiveness. In your own mind, at least!!

It sounds to me like a lot of good things would have been lost to us if not for the local bar and its patrons!!

The only one I already knew was the champagne glass. My high school drama teacher told me that one. Along with how to put subliminal message on sets to get the audience to pay attention and lurve you.

I did not know the honeymoon one...and I was a wedding planner! Learn something new everyday!

Fascinating facts! Champagne glasses made from the mold of her boobs, eh? Good thing she didn't have double d's I suppose, or champagne toasts would be an entirely different affair...more like a chugging contest. Great post!

Clearly Lee and I do not have a fear of alcohol as evidenced by the vlog we were ballsy enough to post over the weekend. I'm still reeling over it, LOL!

p.s. the bit about the mead/honey was so cool! I always enjoy learning new tidbits.

I am the sort of guy who passions to taste radical stuff. Presently I'm making my own photovoltaic panels. I'm managing it all by myself without the assistance of my staff. I'm using the net as the only path to acheive that. I discovered a truly awesome website which explains how to create solar panels and so on. The site explains all the steps required to constructing pv panels.

I am not exactly sure about how precise the information given there is. If some guys over here who have xp with these works can have a peak and give your feedback in the thread it would be awesome and I would extremely treasure it, cauze I really love solar panel construction.

Tnx for reading this. You people are great.
