Friday's Follies and Fun Facts: Jingle Jingle All the Way

Friday, December 11, 2009

Well, as all my bloggy friends try to survive the chill of Old Man Frost, I sit here in Florida, wishing for just a little of the white stuff.  Unfortunately, it was in the 80s twice this week.  So all those mulled ciders, hot cocoas, and holiday libations are not really what you want.  Thus, my holiday spirit is just so-so.  I found a few fun facts with a holiday theme, and some great pics to add to the festivities.

Here is our FL Snowman

 Decorations and Their History:

Germany made the first artificial Christmas trees. They were made of goose feathers and dyed green.  (Ewww...birds are nasty)

Tinsel: In 1610, tinsel was invented in Germany and was made from genuine silver. Machines that shredded silver into thin tinsel-sized strips were invented. However, since silver tinsel tarnishes and loses its shine over time, people eventually created artificial replacements. It must be noted that the original inventor of tinsel remains unknown.
(A tree just ain't a tree without the shiny stuff.  Hey, even trees like Bling!)

 Holiday Movie Trivia Facts:
Danny Kaye was the third choice to play opposite Bing Crosby in the film "White Christmas" (1954). Fred Astaire, who had co-starred with Crosby in the earlier hit "Holiday Inn," was the original choice for Phil Davis, but he turned it down because, at age 55, he felt he was too old for the part. Donald O'Connor was next selected for the sidekick role, but he injured his back and couldn't dance for months. Kaye was quite miffed about being third in line, and also resented playing second banana to Crosby. The atmosphere on the film set was professional, but frosty.

Mrs. Clause's first name is Jessica in the movie "Santa Clause is Coming to Town".

GIFTS BABY

More diamonds are sold around Christmas than any other time of the year.

(Bling! Baby, Bling!)

The first toy product ever advertised on television was Mr. Potato Head. Introduced in 1952, Mr. Potato Head took advantage of TV's explosive growth to gain access to tens of millions of newly "plugged-in" households.
(Has nothing to do with Christmas, but it's a toy that everyone has gotten from Santa at some point!)

A New Year's Factoid for Ed, Moog, MJenks, Billy and TravyG

In Mexico, wearing red underwear on New Year's Eve is said to bring new love in the upcoming year.  (Ladies do you hear that?  My bloggy friends who say Papa ain't lovin' Mama enough?  Get some red panties and head on down to Cancun!)

October 5th is the most popular birthday in the world, due to New Year's celebrations.

Well, Happy Friday!  Bust out your holiday trivia as you get your spirits on this weekend.

Love!

My sister lives in Florida. My niece always wants to see snow. I keep trying to tell her she ain't missin' much! lol I'd trade 17 degrees for 80 any day of the week. I want to put my presents under a palm tree.

Organic Meatbag said...

You say UNFORTUNATELY it was in the 80's last week???? Tell my frozen ballsack how "unfortunate" those 80 degree days are... that's it, I'm becoming a winter Floridian or Texan...
Or Cancun-ian (???)

Man, there Germans are always coming up with the good stuff.

Like artificial Christmas trees, and tinsel, and Mercedes-Benz, and Porche, and the halocaust, and Big Flammable Blimps.

Loved the facts. I learned something today. Interesting about October 5th. My two children were born 40 weeks after honeymoon and anniversary.

I'm not missing the snow this year. Everyone around here is "cold" because we aren't getting past 60 today. I have to laugh since it hasn't been that long since our move here, so this is still warm to me!

I'm totally jumping on the red butt floss trend. Don't know if Cancun is in the budget but I'm willing to crank the furnace, place an ocean sounds cd on and toss sand on the bed...think that will be close enough?

I am going out in the frozen tundra and buying June more than 1 pair of red undies!!

Listen.

Don't tell your reading women to put on red panties and head to Mexico.

Are you TRYING to get them raped??

This is why we say women ask for it....

Wow. That's gonna start a fight.

Red underwear brings new love?

I'm just looking for a one-night meaningless stand.

What causes that?

Maybe this is a better question for Tiger.

Okay...people give me strange looks when I tell them that I really don't like birds. The Bird Cage at the zoo is my least visited place at the zoo. I think I go in there once every two years! Glad to know I am not the only person who thinks they are nasty!

I love the movie White Christmas but thought Danny Kaye was the weakest part of the whole movie.

Do you think that red underwear thing works everywhere? I am pretty sure that Hubs will give me lots of lovin' if I put on what the chick in the photo is wearing (or not wearing, depending on how you look at it!)!!!!

Loved the Christmas Trivia! I never had a Mr. Potato Head, but my friends did. Do they still have that toy?

I also loved the trivia about "White Christmas." It was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I loved Danny Kaye in it. Thanks for the insight on the backstage egos. I hadn't heard any of that.

Maybe I should remind my hubs "More diamonds are sold around Christmas than any other time of the year." . . . momma needs some glitter this year!

I have to say that the weather is one thing I don't miss about New Orleans (I was born & raised there, lived there all my life til 5 years ago). It NEVER felt like the holidays this time of year.

So I feel your pain. Can you turn down your AC a bunch?!!?

Stop yer bitchin'. I'm totally depressed living in Florida while my family is having thirty degree winds (at 20 mph) blow up their sweatshirts.

Why? Cuz I've gotta go BACK to that white crap!!

Turn up the AC and have some hot cocoa.

Fun stuff! Coincidentally I've got some winter trivia coming up in a couple days. I did not know that about tinsel being made of real silver originally. Love the Florida snowman! LOL

Thanks for stopping by.

I'm a mid November birthday which must be pretty popular too, what with Valentines day and all.
