Friday's Follies and Fun Facts - Christmas Edition

Friday, December 18, 2009

Happy Friday My Lip Smackers!  It's time for some CHRISTMAS FACTOIDS for this week's edition of Friday Follies and Fun Facts.  There will be shopping, there will be movies, and there will be merriment.

Christmas Movies:

The author of A Christmas Story, James Shepherd has a cameo appearance in the film as a disgruntled department store customer who tells Ralphie to get to the back of the line.   Shepherd's Christmas stories originally appeared in Playboy Magazines in 1965 and 1967.....

The name of the dog in The Grinch Who Stole Christmas is Max.

The "Grinch" singer and voice of Tony the Tiger is a charming man named Thurl Ravenscroft.

When Saigon fell the signal for all Americans to evacuate was Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" being played on the radio.

The characters Bert and Ernie on Sesame Street were named after Bert the cop and Ernie the taxi driver in Frank Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life."

 Mall Facts:
Malls begin decorating the first week in November.
The most popular holiday song played at malls is Jingle Bells.
Malls will spend an average of $20,000 this year on Christmas decorations.  (WTF?  That's $$ well spent huh?)
72% of malls say that most gift cards are redeemed in January.

Other useless holiday info:

The "Hallelujah Chorus" fits into the Easter portion of Handel's Messiah, not Christmas.
Leonardo Da Vinci invented the scissors.  (Yes, we can thank good 'ol Leonardo for the ability to spend countless hours with ribbons and paper and the ability to break our backs wrapping gifts.)

The woman who has appeared most on the covers of Time magazine is the Virgin Mary -- ten times.

The number one holiday gift for girls, Barbie's  full name is Barbara Millicent Roberts.

Well, that's it my sweets.  MERRY CHRISTMAS WITH LOVE!

Ralphie first appeared in Playboy? Maybe it wasn't a bi-bi gun that would shoot his eye out.

I always feel smarter after reading these posts.. although not a lot of it is stuff that I can use in everyday conversation.

Except that amount malls spend on Christmas decorations. Wow.

June said...

Thank you for the enlightenment once again. Always interesting!

Just think if the malls thought more about donating money to charity than spending it on useless decorations... use the ones from last year like the rest of us!

Iva Messy said...

Thanks for some good info! This will make me sound intelligent around the Christmas dinner table...even if I do have food in my beard and talk with my mouth full.

Liked the dog/cat pic too!

Wow! tnx I shall add that to all the useless information I find hilarious. Barbara Millicent Roberts? Is that like her middle name or was she like married to ken and his last name is Roberts? anywho... Merry Christmas to you as well :) Love the new layout!

I need some mental trivia lately. The real stuff is getting me down.

said...

That was some fun trivia. Seriously interesting!

Didn't know about the Bert-n-Ernie fact, or the Grinch/TonyTiger fact either. Quite frankly I don't think I knew hardly any of them so that was a fun read.

$20k for mall decorations at Christmas? Why don't they just use the same stuff from last year?!?!

That cat and dog cartoon is killer funny!

No that I'm going to steal your thunder, but where do you find all these factoids? (My blog theme is Jonathan and autism, so I won't steal from you.)

Did I mention that I won't steal from you?
