I've had this post running around in my head for over a week now. On August 5th, Nikki Minaj was performing on GMA on ABC and she had a wardrobe malfunction. I hate that term....wardrobe malfunction. It's sort of ridiculous. The fact is her boob popped out and you could see her nipple.
The Parents Television Council was upset. Yeah, o.k., GMA probably should have been using a 5 second delay. Whatever. Here's my thing though. Why the hell were kids watching Nikki Minaj on GMA anyway? It's not like she is a kid friendly performer. AT. ALL. Her lyrics are meant for adults.
Here's my thing, why do so many of these groups focus on crap like this? Why not find something productive to do? Why put all your energy into getting upset about accidents? Oh my goodness, a child might have seen Nikki's boob. So what. A better question would be, what kind of parent was letting their child watch the programming to begin with?
It goes deeper than that though. It's like the crazy conservative groups who single out shows on television with inappropriate content <---their opinions not mine, and get all up in arms about them. First of all, I will decide what is and is not appropriate for me, and for my kids. Second, there are a gazillion and one channels out there for television viewing. If you don't like a program, CHANGE THE DAMN CHANNEL!
Is it just me or isn't that common sense? If you don't like what a radio station broadcasts? CHANGE THE DAMN CHANNEL! I know, it's a novel concept. But, seriously people what's the big deal? There are enough channels out there that there should be something for everyone. Including and not limited to, what you or others consider filth.
Here's the really really great thing about living in a FREE country. No one, and I mean NO ONE, has the right to mandate morality. Now, I know I am going to get all the comments about what if my child runs across something I don't want them to see, blah, blah, blah. We have to protect the children.
Back to that whole....I'll decide what is appropriate for me and mine thing. It's a parent's responsibility to block content THEY deem inappropriate in THEIR homes. It is NOT up to some council, some group of self appointed moral do gooders to decide for the rest of us. Thems the facts kids!
What about you Smackers...do you get all up in arms about this kind of stuff? Do you want others campaigning against all forms of entertainment they deem is inappropriate for you and yours?

I totally agree with you. It drives me nuts. To each their own is what I think, if you don't like it, then don't watch/listen/read it. As long as it isn't physically hurting someone, then let everyone make their own choices and if you don't agree with them....well, get over it.
Problem is...where do you draw the line? Some people are fine with it, or will be fine with it, until it limits them on something they happen to enjoy. THEN all of a sudden its a problem to censor.
My tv has two channels at present....Disney Jr and Nick Jr. If the tv is ON and Lil Duck is home then it is one of those two stations or a dvd is playing that I approve of. I don't watch anything else while she is in the room. I just don't. That's my choice. I don't even watch the news. *shrug* Its not exactly because I'm attempting to shield her from the ugly real world but I'd much prefer to focus on her when we are home together than be glued to the boobtube while she vies for my attention.
I digress.
I think the council's efforts are grossly misplaced in this whole Minaj thing.
As we discussed last night, there are far bigger things parents need to worry about. You know how I feel about Ahna listening to or liking Nikki Minaj. I don't facilitate this for her, but who am I kidding? She is going into the 6th grade. If she wants to listen to it or watch it, she will find a way!
Just like I told you last night, take a moment to consider what we were listening to in the 6th grade! 2 Live Crew, Motley Crue, BBD, etc... Granted, there are varying levels of obscenity, but they all sang of the same topics - sex and drugs...
I know exactly what you mean. Every one has different parameters for what's acceptable for their kids, so we all need to look out for our own. I don't get why people are so hellbent on shutting things down for everyone. Why do they care what other people are doing?
You certainly got it right! It's a pity they're wasting their energy on these things, the solution is so simple. But I figured, they probably think it's their "social responsibility" to rally against everything "inappropriate".
Heart you and this post! I will be that mom too, what I decide is appropriate is what's for Nathaniel.
unless you let your kid run around with hacksaws and what not.
That's not okay haha I might intervene.
People just want someone else to blame for their shortcomings...that is really all it boils down to, I think. Like you said, change the damn channel - it isn't rocket science or anything!! It just stinks that people can't focus their energy on more productive things - like putting their kids to SLEEP at that hour of the night!
WM
Amen sista! It's the PARENTS' responsibility to monitor what their kids are watching. I have parental controls on my kids televisions and computer. Now, I can't control everything, and certainly not what they see at someone else's house...but hopefully my husband and I are teaching them good morals and right from wrong, etc.
Amen!
Change the channel. And trust me if a kid wants to see something they're not supposed to see? They will find a way.
But only YOU can teach your child what you want he/she to know.
Then it's all a crapshoot! heh heh
